Hope Street Xchange were thrilled to host an event exploring the power of using visual sources in teaching. Dr Sheila Quaid, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Sunderland, recently set up a Special Interest Group (SIG) in Using Visual Sources in Teaching. The group wanted to explore, through dialogue with students, whether these visual methods work. The event, held in conjunction with the Students’ Union, was a great success, with many staff and students in attendance.
Our Enterprise Suite was turned into an exhibition hall for the occasion, featuring art by refugee children and posters from colleagues of the SIG depicting a range of visual techniques. There were fascinating presentations throughout the day with topics drawn from many different disciplines; psychology, health, sociology, languages, virtual reality, art in language teaching, colour coding in communication skills and film in teaching sociological theory.
Pip McDonald, who presented at the conference said: “The event provided a tangible and accessible platform for both staff and students to have, not only a visual voice, but a multimodal opportunity. It was probably one of the best days of my professional life. What was really refreshing were the student voices expressed in a collaborative online visual mind map at the end of the event. It was amazing to hear what they had to say, how open they were to what visual workers are trying to and what new input they had to offer.”
Dr Sheila Quaid said: “In addition to our programme, Hope Street Xchange offered the perfect venue. The sense of space and light enhanced our exhibited material. The building is accessible and comfortable for our large group and the staff were really helpful. The students who attended were very pleased to have their first visit to the fabulous new building.”
The work of the SIG will continue on beyond this conference with the upcoming publication of ideas, they are collectively working to break the boundaries and traditions of teaching, exploring new ways of delivering subjects.
